To honour the memory and lives of Evelina Maturine and Lucie Romain, the grandmothers of Dr. Bernice McKenzie, this scholarship has been created to support and encourage students of African descent as they pursue post-secondary studies.

Eligibility

This award will be given annually to at least one student of African descent who is currently attending a secondary school in the Essex County area and will be commencing post-secondary studies in September 2021 on a full-time basis (students will be required to provide proof of attendance).

Attention Essex County High School Students!

The submission deadline for eligible students to apply for the Mac Simpson Award is Friday June 11th, 2021.

The Mac Simpson Award is given annually to at least one student of African descent who is currently attending a secondary school in the Essex County region and will be commencing post-secondary studies in September 2021 on a full-time basis.

If eligible please forward completed applications to curator@amherstburgfreedom.org. Applicants are also welcome to mail or drop applications off to the Amherstburg Freedom Museum (277 King Street, Amherstburg).

Canada Summer Jobs

Amherstburg Freedom Museum is hiring. We are hiring (1) Museum Cataloguer position. In order to apply applicants must meet eligibility requirements set by Canada Summer Jobs, and have reliable transportation to the museum.

The deadline to apply is December 7, 2020. Preference will be given to members of a visible minority and fluent in both official languages, but all applicants will be considered. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Interested candidates should e-mail a cover letter and resume to curator@amherstburgfreedom.org.

Canada Summer Jobs eligibility requirements:

CSJ 2020 includes new expanded eligibility to include all youth aged 15 to 30, which means youth who are not students are now also eligible

  • Applicant must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • Applicant must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • Applicant must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
