DESCRIPTION:The University community is invited to gather outside Chrysler Hall Tower on Friday\, Jan. 31\, for the ceremonial raising of the Black History\, Black Futures Month flag. \n\n\n\nThe event begins at noon with a program featuring African drumming\, the singing of the Black National Anthem\, poetry\, and addresses from campus leaders\, including Clinton Beckford\, vice-president\, people\, equity\, and inclusion; Shetina M. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dorothy Abbott. This evocative photographic essay celebrates the descendants of freedom-seekers who escaped slavery in the United States in the years before the American Civil War. Some came entirely alone and unaided; others found their way to Canada with the help of a clandestine network of “conductors” and “stations” called the “Underground Railroad.” Approximately 30\,000 men\, women and children fled north to freedom\, settling from the Maritimes as far west as the Manitoba border. SUMMARY:Deanna Bowen: Black Drones in the Hive
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Crystal Mowry. Originally produced by the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery\, the exhibition Black Drones in the Hive unfolds in a series of visual chapters to reveal the strategic erasures which have enabled Canadian canons such as the Group of Seven to exist without question or complication. The exhibition draws its title from a racist assessment of William Robinson\, a Black journeyman\, as written by a city official in Berlin\, Ontario (now Kitchener) in the records of the Waterloo County House of Industry and Refuge (1869–1950). Her hilarious stand up\, online commentaries\, skits\, and monologues keep her fans thoroughly entertained. \n\n\n\nThe Detroit native known for her viral\, “Only In Detroit” series is a master stand-up comedian who has been on multiple television networks including Amazon Prime\, BET Soul\, Fox\, VICE\, Tubi\, NBC\, and ABC News\, to name a few. DESCRIPTION:Join poet Erik E-Tomic Johnson and City of Windsor Multicultural Storyteller Teajai Travisfor a Blaze of Story.  \n\n\n\nErik E-Tomic Johnson is a local hip-hop inspired wordsmith from Windsor-Essexregion\, and a proud son of Sandwich Towne in Windsor’s west end as well as a member of the afroindigenous community and a poet and advocate for artists with disabilities. Erik has lent his talents andvoice to numerous events and causes in his community and abroad over his lengthy career as awordsmith including\, competing in the Windsor Slam Poetry competition and becoming the 2018 grandslam champion and going on to join the Windsor Poetry Slam team\, where he then went on to representWindsor at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word\, he then went on to be an interview on Talkin RealMelanin as well as being featured in the Across The River to Freedom documentary as well as numerousother events.  \n\n\n\nMore recently Erik has stepped into the world of self-publishing when he launched his firstcollection of poetry called Well Versed\, and most recently he has tapped into his talent for storytellingby facilitating a charity event known as All Hallowed Reads Halloween event which will have its 3rdinstallment coming later this year and his second collection of poems.
