DESCRIPTION:Join poet Erik E-Tomic Johnson and City of Windsor Multicultural Storyteller Teajai Travisfor a Blaze of Story.  \n\n\n\nErik E-Tomic Johnson is a local hip-hop inspired wordsmith from Windsor-Essexregion\, and a proud son of Sandwich Towne in Windsor’s west end as well as a member of the afroindigenous community and a poet and advocate for artists with disabilities. Erik has lent his talents andvoice to numerous events and causes in his community and abroad over his lengthy career as awordsmith including\, competing in the Windsor Slam Poetry competition and becoming the 2018 grandslam champion and going on to join the Windsor Poetry Slam team\, where he then went on to representWindsor at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word\, he then went on to be an interview on Talkin RealMelanin as well as being featured in the Across The River to Freedom documentary as well as numerousother events.  \n\n\n\nMore recently Erik has stepped into the world of self-publishing when he launched his firstcollection of poetry called Well Versed\, and most recently he has tapped into his talent for storytellingby facilitating a charity event known as All Hallowed Reads Halloween event which will have its 3rdinstallment coming later this year and his second collection of poems. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us on Thursday\, August 31st at 6:30pm at the Amherstburg Freedom Museum (277 King Street) for an in-person presentation and reception for the opening of the exhibit “Beyond the Underground Railroad: A History of Black Settlement in Nineteenth Century Amherstburg.” This exhibit was created by University of Windsor student Karleigh Kochaniec as part of the Local Black History Internship Program\, which is a partnership between the Department of History\, University of Windsor and the Amherstburg Freedom Museum. Generously funded by a Mitacs Accelerate Program Grant and the Board of Directors of the Amherstburg Freedom Museum. \n\n\n\nDuring the exhibit opening we will also award the Mac Simpson Award and Maturine-Romain Scholarship to students of African descent who are commencing post-secondary studies in September 2023. The Mac Simpson Award was created to honour the legacy of Museum founder\, Melvin Mac Simpson. The Maturine-Romain Award is given on behalf of Dr. Bernice McKenzie to honour the lives and memory of Evelina Maturine and Lucie Romain\, the grandmothers of Dr. McKenzie. We hope you will join us!

DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Fort Malden National Historic Site\, Parks Canada to create the exhibit “A Tradition of Service: Black Military Presence In Amherstburg” which is on display until November 12th. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit has been created in two parts and can be viewed across both sites. Fort Malden’s exhibit focuses on the history of the War of 1812 and the Upper Canada Rebellion. Amherstburg Freedom Museum’s exhibit looks at individuals who fought in these military campaigns including John Joseph Mulder\, Josiah Henson and Jeremiah Harris.
