February 27 @ 10:15 am 2:00 pm EST

Arts Collective Theatre in collaboration with The Amherstburg Freedom Museum Presents
The Price of Freedom
An original play by Carlos Anthony
Directed by Chris Rabideau

We are excited to extend an invitation to students in Grades 7-12 to attend a school show performance and panel discussion on Thursday, February 27, at 10:15 AM at the Capitol Theatre.

About The Show

Set against the turbulent backdrop of 1860s Canada, The Price of Freedom tells the gripping story of John Anderson, a freedom seeker accused of killing a bounty hunter in self-defence. Pursued relentlessly across borders, Anderson’s case becomes a flashpoint for Canada’s moral and legal identity as the United States demands his extradition. Supported by abolitionists from the Underground Railroad and allies within a powerful fraternity, Anderson’s journey unfolds through tense courtroom drama, haunting memories of escape, and the collective fight for dignity and justice.

As the trial challenges Canada’s role as a sanctuary for the oppressed, The Price of Freedom explores the enduring cost of liberty, the bonds of brotherhood, and the fight for dignity in the face of systemic injustice.

Why Attend?

We believe this performance provides a unique educational opportunity for students to engage with Canada’s historical narrative and explore critical themes of freedom, justice, and human rights. Following the performance, a panel discussion featuring the play’s creators, historians, and community leaders will provide students with deeper insights into the story’s historical context and contemporary relevance.

Curriculum Connections:

To enhance classroom learning, we have attached a school package here that includes a lesson plan created by the OSSTF. This resource connects directly to curriculum topics, including:

  • Canadian and American history and the Underground Railroad
  • Legal studies and human rights
  • Social justice and ethical decision-making
