Black History – Artifacts

The term “collection” as used in this Collections Records Management Policy is understood to mean the acquisition of historically and culturally significant artifacts and archival material that contribute to an understanding of heritage.

As a physical connection to the past, conservation of our museum collection and community research facilities preserves the museum’s cultural values and allows community members and visitors an opportunity to directly connect with the past in a tangible and meaningful way.

Our collection which focuses on preserving and presenting the history of Underground Railway in Canada and legacies of those Freedom Seekers and their descendants who built their lives in Essex County during and after that period through the collection of its material culture. Through our collection and artifacts on display we continue to preserve and educate the public on this often overlooked and important historic movement in Canada and Essex County.

To donate artifacts to the museum please contact the museum at 519-736-5433.

Between 2021 and 2022, the Amherstburg Freedom Museum undertook the renovation and re-organization of our collection storage space, to make room for more artifact storage, to help make the collection more accessible and to continue protecting and preserving our collection for generations to come.
