Freedom Walk 2026

Join us Saturday, July 11th, 10 am-1 pm at the Amherstburg Freedom Museum as we host the
#FreedomWalk2026 and the travelling Harriet Tubman “Journey to Freedom” sculpture. This will be the culminating event in a multi-day journey across Southwestern Ontario that began in Niagara Falls July 1st and ends in Amherstburg, July 11th, commemorating the Underground Railroad and the enduring legacy of Black freedom seekers in North America and the thirtieth anniversary of Anthony Cohen’s 1996 Walk to Freedom.

Freedom Walk 2026 is an international tour led by historian, educator, and explorer Tony Cohen. Beginning in Maryland on May 4th, the tour has traced routes of the Underground Railroad, engaging communities at every stop along the way in opportunities, to learn, reflect, and be inspired. https://www.menare.org/

Enjoy photo opportunities with the travelling nine-foot Harriet Tubman “Journey to Freedom” bronze sculpture by Wesley Wofford, a meet and greet and end-of-tour presentation with Anthony Cohen, museum tours, a presentation on the Civil War service of Harriet Tubman and others of African descent from SW Ontario, a “Camp Delaware” film screening and panel discussion with filmmakers Mark and Francine Butler, and (weather permitting) a brief neighbourhood Black heritage walking tour. No pre-registration required. All are welcome. Free event; donations to the museum appreciated.
