Derek graduated from Sandwich Secondary School in 2001, after which he attended the University of Windsor, earning degrees in Human Kinetics and Education in 2005 and 2006 respectively. While studying, Derek was a member of the University of Windsor Lancer Track and Field and Football teams, between 2001 and 2006. Since 2006, Derek has been a teacher at Sandwich Secondary School. He is also the current Guidance Counsellor at Chatham Kent Secondary School . Derek continues to coach across several sports, including Track and Field, Basketball, and Football. Additionally, Derek is Co-Founder and Coordinator of Chatham Summer Camps. He is also a decorated athlete, as a two-time All-OUA Track and Field Champion, a three-time Team Track and Field National Champion, and a five-time team OUA Track and Field Champion.
